Your Treatment Journey

Step 1

After your initial consultation, you’ll attend an examination to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and to explore if any other fillings are needed. The dentist will take impressions of your teeth and gums. This is to allow your dentist to shape your new composite filling to match your current bite to ensure comfort when eating.

Step 2

The tooth to receive the composite filling will be cleaned and prepared. Your dentist will begin applying the resin mixture in layers, hardening it with a curing light in between layers to guarantee a perfect seal and maximise its strength.

Step 3

You’ll be free to return to your daily routine right away – for deeper fillings you may experience some tenderness for a few days afterwards whilst your treated tooth settles down and this is normal and can be managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen.

More about Composite Fillings

If you experience a sharp, shooting pain or sensitivity when eating hot, cold or sweet food, you might have dental caries (decay) and need a filling. If you get this pain in a tooth that’s already filled, that may indicate the filling is a poor fit – or old and needs to be renewed.

Whether you need a new filling or if you want to replace an old one, improve the condition and appearance of a tooth with composite fillings from Astley Dental Centre.

Composite fillings are a popular option because they are tooth-coloured and undetectable. While amalgam fillings are strong and long-lasting, they can affect your self-confidence because of their dark, metallic appearance. This can be noticeable to others when you open your mouth if you have amalgam fillings on multiple teeth.

From the first point of contact, our team at Astley Dental Centre will make sure you’re comfortable and well-informed about your options and the treatment process.

At your consultation, your dentist will be happy to answer any questions you have to ensure you’re at ease. Once you’re fully informed and happy to get out of pain, improve your dental health and start your return to normality, your dentist will take impressions. This is to make sure the composite filling is a perfect match in shape and size for your comfort when chewing food.

Then they’ll mix the composite resin to be a perfect shade for your teeth and get to work, sculpting the resin into the tooth to seal it carefully. Under your direction, your dentist can cleverly shape this resin to not only seal the tooth, but give it a more desirable shape. This can help if the tooth to be filled also has a chip, getting twice the benefits from this single treatment.

Seal your tooth, protect your root and keep the ability to laugh with the freedom you deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a filling do?

A filling involves cleaning out any present dental caries (decay), using air, water or careful drilling.

Once your tooth is free of any infected tooth material, this is filled using materials like amalgam or composite resin.

This is to seal away and protect the remaining tooth material and the root inside from further decay.

How do I know if I need a filling?

If you experience sudden nerve pain for a few moments when eating hot or cold food, this may indicate a cavity or a poorly fitting or worn out filling.

But do not wait for a cavity to reach this point. Stick to your regular visits to the dentists. They’ll be able to identify the start of dental caries and plan ahead to keep your teeth in top condition.

How many appointments are needed?

White fillings are usually completed in a single appointment, taking around 2 hours. This can differ depending on the size of the filling.

Do I need injections?

Numbing and injections aren’t normally required for a composite filling procedure but you may experience some tenderness if the filling is closer to the root.

You’ll feel the relief afterwards but you can manage any tenderness with supermarket bought painkillers such as paracetamol.

Do I need any drilling?

Composite shouldn’t require any drilling but if you’re replacing an old filling, the dentist may need to clear out the tooth to remove damaged tooth material underneath.

Great experience!! They have new(ish) receptionist who is very helpful and welcoming and the dentist is excellent. Dentist did everything he could to save my tooth, and managed to fill it. He is very patient and professional and explains everything simply even drawing on a white board to help. I would definitely recommend.

I recently used this dental practice, and I must say, the quality of service was superb. I don't normally post reviews, but in this instance you've got to give credit where credit is due. The dentist was very considerate (I get quite nervous with dental work) and talked me through everything. The quality of the work was top notch as well. Excellent service around and l wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
