  • Cover surface damage and restore shape

If you have surface damage on your tooth, a dental crown at Astley Dental Centre can strengthen the tooth and correct imperfections. This porcelain or ceramic shell protects your tooth and delivers a healthier, natural-looking smile.

A dental crown replaces the visible part of the tooth with a strong coating made of ceramic or porcelain. The crowned tooth functions just like a natural tooth and blends seamlessly with the rest of your smile.

Each crown you opt for will be bespoke to be a perfect match for your other teeth. The shape of the crown can be made to close the gaps between your teeth. The shade can be a natural one, or brighter if teeth whitening treatment is on your mind.

While dental fillings fill the gap inside of a tooth, a crown fits over the top of the tooth instead. This seals it away, protecting it without compromising its longevity or strength.

Your Treatment Journey

Step 1

Your dentist will carry out a dental examination to make sure you’re in good oral health, and inspect the tooth that needs a crown. They’ll also take impressions of your teeth to make sure the crown to be created is the right size and shape for maximum comfort when opening and closing your mouth.

Step 2

Your dentist will file down the tooth which needs the crown fitting, so the crown won’t be too large for your mouth. A temporary crown will then be applied to protect the tooth whilst your impressions are sent off to create your permanent crown.

Step 3

Once your new crown is back from the lab, you’ll return for your crown fitting appointment- your dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one in place. This is a painless procedure, so the only thing that should be on your mind is holding up the mirror to see your perfected smile. Crowns can last up to 15 years if properly looked after.

More about Crowns

A dental crown is a porcelain or ceramic restoration which is cemented over the visible portion of a damaged tooth to strengthen and protect it.

While a veneer is placed on the front of the tooth, a crown coats the front and back, all the way to the gum line.

The porcelain or ceramic material makes crowns strong and durable. The tooth to receive the crown must be filed down to make sure it’s a good fit for the rest of your teeth and doesn’t cause an irregularity.

The size, shape and colour of the crown can be tweaked to suit you perfectly, matching your teeth perfectly as well as correcting chips or gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a crown?

If you have a tooth which is damaged on the surface, or if larger fillings have left your tooth weaker than it used to be, a crown is a good option to strengthen the entire tooth and restore its appearance.

Does it hurt?

No – having your tooth prepared for a crown may require some drilling of the tooth to make sure the crown isn’t too large for your mouth.

For this, you may be treated under a local anaesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. Fitting the crown afterwards is completely painless.

How long does a crown last?

Dental crowns can last 15 years with good dental hygiene practices and regular dentist visits.

What are crowns made of?

Smart Dental Care provides dental crowns which are made of ceramic or porcelain, giving them an appearance identical to natural teeth as well as making them strong and long-lasting.

Should I get a crown, a veneer or an implant?

Crowns are a way to strengthen teeth which are weakened by fillings on the inside and damaged on the outside, protecting the whole tooth.

Veneers are an excellent choice for teeth with minor surface damage on the outside but are strong and intact on the inside.

This is because veneers only attach to the fronts of the teeth and don’t lend strength to the tooth overall. Implants are one of the options available to you if the tooth is too damaged to attach a crown or veneer to.

Great experience!! They have new(ish) receptionist who is very helpful and welcoming and the dentist is excellent. Dentist did everything he could to save my tooth, and managed to fill it. He is very patient and professional and explains everything simply even drawing on a white board to help. I would definitely recommend.

I recently used this dental practice, and I must say, the quality of service was superb. I don't normally post reviews, but in this instance you've got to give credit where credit is due. The dentist was very considerate (I get quite nervous with dental work) and talked me through everything. The quality of the work was top notch as well. Excellent service around and l wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
