Your Treatment Journey

Step 1

After your initial consultation, you’ll attend an examination to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy and qualify for an implants procedure.

Step 2

Next, your dentist will place an implant in the jaw, a procedure done under a local anaesthetic. Once this implant is placed, you will need 6-8 weeks for the implant to integrate and heal. Some post-procedure bruising is natural and can be managed with painkillers.

Step 3

Once your jaw has recovered and the implant has integrated, you’ll return for a second visit and a replacement tooth will be fixed onto the implant.

Digitally scanning your mouth using the latest technology creates a 3D view of your current smile and teeth alignment.

Then we can review this image together to design your new smile, by repositioning certain teeth to suit your facial structure, reducing gaps and achieving a symmetrical, seamless smile.

Once you’re happy with the information you’ve been given, your replacement root will be placed under local anaesthetic to ensure a comfortable experience.

In the meantime, your scans and impressions will be sent off to craft your crown attachment. This break is essential to give you time to recover and for the root to integrate into your jaw.

The crown attachment is shipped back to Astley Dental Centre and by the time it arrives your brand new titanium root should be securely in place and ready to receive the tooth attachment.

At your fitting session, the replacement tooth will be attached securely to the implant. You’ll receive guidance on looking after the implant during the first few months of use and general aftercare for teeth and gums.

After your procedure, we’ll check in with you to see how you’re feeling once the numbing has worn off and to ascertain if you require any additional support.

Can I get implants if I wear dentures?

Yes – Replacing dentures with implants is a popular decision because implants are fixed into the jaw.

They tend to be a lot more comfortable than dentures with added strength and durability. This gives you peace of mind and less upkeep with removal, cleaning and denture glue.

How long do implants last?

With good hygiene upkeep and sticking to regular check-ups, you shouldn’t need to worry about needing a replacement anytime soon.

Some dental implants can last in excess of 20 years. You’ll be given all the aftercare and hygiene guidance you need at your appointment.

Does getting an implant hurt?

When you’re having your implant placed, you’ll be given local anaesthetic to ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

Once the anaesthetics wear off you may notice some bruising in the area which is completely normal and can be successfully managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

The fitting of the crown attachment is completely painless as it screws onto the implant and requires no further numbing.

Are dental implants my only option for tooth loss?

Not at all; if you’re missing more than one tooth, implants, dentures and bridges are all viable options – it’s all about what works for you and meets your individual requirements.

These would be discussed in detail at a consultation, to ensure you’re well aware of your options.

What happens when I finish my treatment?

You’ll be advised of aftercare to make sure your implant and the surrounding gum are kept in peak condition with good cleaning techniques.

You’ll be advised of any particularly tough foods to take caution while eating, as your bone will continue to surround the implant and make it exceptionally sturdy.
