Seal And Protect Your Teeth To Eliminate Dental Pain

NHS Fillings

  • Seals and protects the inside of the tooth and eliminates pain
  • Fillings with long-lasting strength and durability
  • Cheaper than composite fillings
  • Shaped to maintain a comfortable bite

If you’re in pain when eating and drinking hot, cold or sweet foods, there’s a good chance you have a cavity. And if you already have a filling where the pain is, you may need to have the filling renewed.

Amalgam (metal) fillings from Astley Dental Centre can seal and protect your teeth to eliminate dental pain. Amalgam is known for its strength and durability, having been used in successful fillings for generations.

Your Treatment Journey

Step 1

Your dentist will carry out a dental examination to make sure you’re in good oral health and inspect the tooth that needs a filling for any existing infections before treatment is carried out.

Step 2

Your dentist will then start to clean the tooth which needs the filling, removing any decay and old filling material (if present). For deeper fillings that are closer to the root, you will be given a numbing injection to make sure you’re comfortable, but shallow fillings may not require this.

Step 3

Next, the dentist will apply a small amount of amalgam to the cavity and begin shaping it. With keen attention to detail, the dentist will make sure the filling is comfortable for the nearby teeth and doesn’t stand out or get in the way when biting. The amalgam dries quickly and you’ll be free to leave almost immediately.

More Information about Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam is a mixture of metals, including silver, mercury, copper and tin. It is the strongest form of filling and also happens to be the cheapest filling material available.

The amalgam is applied to the inside of a cavity and shaped to fill the space perfectly to prevent any spaces. The top of the filling will also be shaped to ensure it meets the opposing teeth comfortably.

Because amalgam in metal fillings is stronger and can be more durable than composite fillings, they are especially useful for larger fillings on the back teeth, as these teeth are subjected to the most pressure when eating on a day-to-day basis.

Because Astley Dental Centre provides both NHS and Private Treatment options, if you do have concerns about the appearance and risks of amalgam, you can discuss composite (white) fillings with your dentist too or click here for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a filling?

If you experience sharp, nagging pain when eating hot cold or sweet food, this can indicate a hole or cavity in the tooth which is allowing temperature and sugars to directly affect the tooth’s nerve. This wouldn’t happen if your tooth was in a healthy state. An old or loose filling can trigger similar pain.

Does having a new amalgam filling hurt?

The deeper a cavity or filling is, the closer to the root the dentist will need to work and the greater the chance of pain and discomfort.

For this reason, you’ll likely be provided with a numbing gel or needle to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Shallower fillings can sometimes be carried out with no numbing at all.

How long do amalgam fillings last?

Amalgam fillings can exceed 15 years, but this can vary based on how much pressure the filling is subjected to, if you grind your teeth for example.

Should I get amalgam or composite fillings?

While composite fillings are widely regarded as less hard-wearing than amalgam fillings, they are more aesthetically pleasing as they are undetectable.

Alternatively, while amalgam fillings are more visible, they are stronger and more durable than composite. This is a conversation you can have with your dentist so you’ll be fully informed before you go ahead.

Great experience!! They have new(ish) receptionist who is very helpful and welcoming and the dentist is excellent. Dentist did everything he could to save my tooth, and managed to fill it. He is very patient and professional and explains everything simply even drawing on a white board to help. I would definitely recommend.

I recently used this dental practice, and I must say, the quality of service was superb. I don't normally post reviews, but in this instance you've got to give credit where credit is due. The dentist was very considerate (I get quite nervous with dental work) and talked me through everything. The quality of the work was top notch as well. Excellent service around and l wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
